Ahmed Al-Hasan was asked the following question:

"Ahmad Al Hassan, the Inheritor and Representative of Imam Mahdi (pbuh): I would like to know exactly, who the Yamani is and if there are any specific qualities that define his personality and allow us to identify the character of the Yamani? Is he from Yemen? Is he an infallible so that he would not be capable of misguiding people or leading them away from the Truth?

It was noted in the narration of Imam Baqir (pbuh) that:

"The Banner of the Yamani is a Banner of faith and dedication. It is prohibited for any Muslim to turn away from him. And who ever turns away from him, then they are from the people of hell, because the Yamani calls to the Truth and to the Right Path."

Answer by Imam Ahmad Al Hassan, the Yamani ():

In the name of Allah the Merciful, the Extremely Merciful

First, it is necessary to know that Mecca is from Touhama, and that Touhama is from Yemen. So, Mohammad (pbuhahp) and the Holy Family of the Prophet (pbut) are all “Yamanis” (meaning they are from Yemen). Mohammad (pbuhahp) is a “Yamani”, Ali (pbuh) is a “Yamani”, Imam Mahdi (pbuh) is  a “Yamani”, the twelve Mahdies are “Yamanis”, and the First Mahdi is also a “Yamani”.

And that is what the first working jurists knew (May God’s Mercy be upon them).

But they were succeeded by a later generation who have ruined worship and followed their lusts so they will meet their perdition.”

(Surah Mariam, Verse 59).

Also Al Majlisi (may God’s mercy be upon him) in the book of Bihar Al Anwar, called the speech of the Progeny of Mohammad (pbuh) the “Yamani Wisdom”.

(Bihar Al-Anwar: Volume 1, p. 1).

This was also reported by the Messenger of Allah (pbuh), as Abd Al Mutalib (pbuh) named the sacred house the "Yamani Ka’aba".

(Bihar Al-Anwar. Volumes. 22,51,75).

Concerning the characteristics that define the Yamani`s personality, it was narrated by Imam Baqir (pbuh) that:

"There is no Banner better than that of the Banner of the Yamani, it is the Banner of faith and dedication, because he calls you to your Leader. When the Yamani appears, selling weapons to people including Muslims becomes prohibited, and  when the Yamani appears, stand up with him, because his Banner is the Banner of Faith. And it is prohibited for any Muslim to turn away from him, and who ever turns away from him, then they are from the people of hell, because the Yamani calls to the Truth and to the Right Path."

(Al-Ghaybah - Mohammad Ibn Ibrahim Al Numani: P. 264)

And in this account there is the following:

~ First:

"…and it is prohibited for any Muslim to turn away from him, and who ever turns away from him, then they are from the people of hell…”

and this means that the Yamani has the Status of a Divine Leader. Because no one can be a Proof (Hujjah) or a Successor from Allah to the people to such a degree that if they turn away from him they will enter hell even if they pray and fast. This can only be true if they are the Successors of Allah on His earth and these are the Prophets, Messengers, Imams and Mahdies.

~ Second:

“…because he calls to the Truth and to the Right Path”.

And the Call to the Truth and the Right Path means that this person is never mistaken nor do they make a mistake that would involve people in wrong doing and he does not take people away from what is right. Therefore this person is an infallible and his infallibility is both stated and written.

[...]

The result of what was discussed above (in the first and second part) is that the Yamani is one of the Successors of Allah on His earth and his succession on earth has been stated in a Divine Text.

It has furthermore irrefutably been proven in many narrations and many texts that the Successors of the Prophet Mohammed (pbuhahp) are the 12 Imams (pbut) and that after them there will be 12 Mahdies (pbut) and that there is no infallible Successor from Allah on this earth but them. And through them is the completion of Grace, Perfection of Religion and the Sealing of the Celestial Messages.

In addition, the 11 imams (pbut) have all passed away and there remains only Imam Mahdi (pbuh) and the 12 Mahdies (pbut).

And the Yamani calls the people to Imam Mahdi (pbuh). Therefore the Yamani must be the first of the Mahdis because the 11 Mahdies that come after him are from his Progeny.

"They are all descendants of one another. Allah is the Hearer, the Knower."

(The Family of Imran, Verse 34.).

The Mahdies (pbut) also come after the time of the reappearance of Imam Mahdi (pbuh). Indeed they arrive during the state of Divine Justice. And what is known and is fixed is that the first Mahdi will be there during the time of Imam Mahdi and he is the first Believer in Imam Mahdi (pbuh) when he first emerges. The Yamanis aim is to provide the necessities for the emergence of Imam Mahdi as it was narrated in the Will of Prophet Mohammed (pbuhahp). And the characteristics of the Yamani become defined by the fact that the Yamani is the first Mahdi and he is from the 12 Mahdies.

Also, the accounts of the Holy Family of the Prophet (pbuh) describe the first Mahdi and give in detail, his name, his attributes and his habits. For certain, his name is Ahmad, his nickname is Abdullah (Servant of God), i.e. Israel, and that people call him “Israelan” (a Jew).

And the Prophet Mohammed (pbuhahp) said:

“My name is Ahmad and I am Abdullah (the servant of Allah), my name is Israel, and who ever ordered him has ordered me and whatever God said to Israel was also meant for me.“

(Tafseer al Ayashi: Ch.1, p. 44. Al Burhan: Ch.1, p 95. Al Bihar: Ch. 7, p. 178)

and the first Mahdi is the first of the 313, and he is from Basra.

On his cheek is a mark and on his forehead is dandruff. His body is similar to the body of Moses the son of Imran (pbuh) and on his back is the Seal of Prophethood. Through Him the Will of the Prophet (pbuh) is carried out. He is the most Knowledgeable from all creation after the Imams, who were mentioned in the Quran, the Torah and the Bible. And at the beginning of his appearance he will appear as a young man.

The Prophet Mohammed (pbuhahp) said:

“…then he mentioned a young man and he said, ‘If you see him, pay allegiance to him because he is the Successor of the Mahdi’.”.

(Bisharat Al' Islam p. 30)

[And the Prophet (pbuhahp) said in the night of his death:]

"O Father of Hassan, bring me a inkwell and leaf," then he started dictating his Will to Ali . In it he said:

"O Ali, there will be twelve Imams and after them there will be twelve Mahdis. You, O Ali, are the first of the twelve Imams.” And he dictated his Will until he came to a part where he completed mentioning the 12 Imams and then he said:

“If the day of death comes to him (Hassan), let him hand the Will over to his son, Mohammed the Mandate of the Holy Family of Mohammad Peace be upon them all. These are the twelve Imams. Then there will be twelve Mahdi’s after them. Then when the day of death comes to him, let him hand the Will over to his son, the first of the close ones. He has three names. One like mine and my Father’s: Abdullah (Servant of God), Ahmad, and the third name is the Mahdi (the Guided) and he is the first Believer.”

(Bihar Al Anwar: Vol. 53, p. 147. Al Ghayba Al Tussi: p. 150. & Ghayat Al Moram. Vol. 2 p.241).

Also narrated that Imam Sadiq said:

“From us, (the Prophet and his Progeny), after the Q’aim (the Envoy), there will be Twelve Mahdis from the descendants of Imam Hussein.”

(Bihar Al Anwar: Vol. 53, p. 148. Al Burhan: Vol. 3, p. 310. Al Ghayba Al Tusi:  p. 385.)

Also from Imam Sadiq(AS) it is narrated that he said:

“From our Progeny, after the Qa' im (the Riser) there will be eleven Mahdis from the descendants of Imam Hussein.”

(Bihar Al Anwar. Vol. 53 P. 145).

And in this narration, the Qa’im is the first Mahdi and not Imam Mahdi (pbuh) because Imam Mahdi (pbuh) has 12 Mahdies after him.

Imam Baqir (pbuh) said in the description of the First Mahdi:

“It is he, whose color has a touch of red, hollow eyes, unlinked eyebrows, wide shoulders, dandruff on his head and a mark on his face. May Allah have Mercy upon Moses.”

(Al-Ghayba Al Numan: P. 223)

Also the Prince of Believers, Imam Ali (pbuh) said as part of a longer narration:

“…The first one of them (the Mahdies) will be from Basra and the last one from Ebdal.”

(Evangel of Islam: P. 249.)

Also Imam Sadiq (pbuh) said in a long narration where he mentioned the followers of the Qa’em (pbuh):

“…and from BasraAhmad…”

(Bisharat al islam: P.148.)

In addition Imam Baqir (pbuh) said:

"The Qa'em (the one who will Rise) will have two names; one is hidden and the other is announced. The one announced is Mohammad and the one hidden is Ahmad".

(Kamal Al Din: Part 2, page 653, # 57.)

Ahmad is the name of the first Mahdi and Mohammed is the name of Imam Mahdi (pbuh) as has been made clear in the Will of the  Prophet Mohammed (pbuhahp).

And Imam Baqir (A.S) said:

“Allah Almighty has a treasure in Talkan, neither gold nor silver, and twelve thousand in Khurasan. Their slogan is “Ahmed Ahmed” and they are lead by a young man from Hashim’s sons who will ride a white mule and have a red headband on. It is as if I am looking at him across the Euphrates. So if you hear about that, rush to him, even if you have to crawl across the snow.”

(Montakhab Al Anwar Almodi’a: p. 343.)

And Ahmad is the name of the First Mahdi.

In the book al Malahim wal Fitan by Sayed bin Tawos al Hassany, p 27, it is stated that:

“The Prince of Anger is not from this neither from that but he is a Khalifa Yamani”.

Also in the book Al Malahim Walfitan on page 80 it is stated that:

“They gather and look at who they pay allegiance to, and while they are like that, they will hear an unknown voice never spoken before by a jinn or by a human saying: “Give allegiance to - such person - by his name. He is neither of this nor of that but he is the Representative ‘Khalifa’ Yamani.”

Also, Sheik Ali Al Korani mentioned in his book Mojam Ahadeeth Al Imam Al Mahdi (pbuh) (Ch.1, p. 299):

“The  Mahdi is only from Quraysh, and the Divine Succession is only with them, except that it has an origin in the Yamani."

Since the first Mahdi is from the Progeny of Imam Mahdi (pbuh), he has to have an “incomplete” family tree since the Progeny of Imam Mahdi (pbuh) are unknown. These attributes are the attributes of the victorious Yamani, and they are the attributes of the first Mahdi because they are indeed one person as it has been shown above.

If, however, you want more information, I will say, that the Yamani is the one that prepares the ground at the time of the of Holy Emergence and he is from the 313 and will give the Banner to Imam Mahdi (pbuh).

The First Mahdi will also be present at the time of the Holy Emergence. And he will be the first Believer in Imam Mahdi (pbuh) at the beginning of the Holy Emergence as well as before the period of the Holy Rising of Imam Mahdi.

If these two individuals were only one person it would become necessary that one of them becomes the Proof (Hujjat) over the other. And since the Imams and the Mahdies are all the Divine Proofs (Hujjat) and Successors of Allah in front of all creation and since the first Mahdi is from them, he would therefore be a Proof (Hujjat) over the Yamani.

Therefore the first Mahdi and the Yamani have to be one and the same person.

So the Yamani (his name is Ahmad, he is from Basra, has a mark on his right cheek) is at the beginning of the emergence a young man who has dandruff on his head is the most Knowledgeable, after the Imams, from all people  in the Quran, Torah and Bible. He has an incomplete family tree, is nicknamed the “Mahdi” and is an infallible Imam that people MUST obey. No Muslim should turn away from him and who ever turns away from him is from the people of hell because he calls to the Truth and the Right Path. He calls the people to Imam Al Mahdi (pbuh)… and… and… all that has been dictated from the Imams about the characteristics of the Mahdi.

What remains to be said is that all the followers of the Yamani from the 313 who are with the Imam (pbuh) are called “Yamaniyoon” because they are directly related to their leader the Yamani. And among them are the Yamani of San’aa and Yamani of Iraq.
